Industries outside of healthcare might wonder about the role of project management in the industry. Project management is well known for its contributions in construction, engineering, and information technology, but what about healthcare?
Software Implementation
Software implementation is very common in healthcare. New smart phone apps, documentation systems and personnel evaluation systems are used every day in healthcare. Thanks to the diligence of project managers behind these implementations, all stakeholders can count on highly functional tools to perform their daily responsibilities.
Facility expansions
Facilities are built with the intent of providing care for a certain number of patients but sometimes the estimates are incorrect. In the event this happens a facility might decide to add another wing to better accommodate patient care needs. The expertise of a project manager is a great resource for these additions as they are highly skilled at removing impediments and adhering to budgets.
Safety Measures
A project that’s not done properly can eventually lead to patient safety problems. This is another way project managers can provide improvements. Risk assessments are done for projects to better manage issues that could arise and provide plans for how to handle them. This ultimately improves organizational planning.
Benefits to the Industry
Project management is crucial to healthcare operations. As processes improve throughout organizations, patients experience improvements in quality of care. Consequently, a decrease in lawsuits is experienced as risks are reduced. Communication between providers and patients improve because of project management as well. When processes are clear to providers, they are better able to educate patients on care plans and procedures. Stakeholder management improves with project management involvement. This includes internally, like executive management, and externally, like insurance companies and government agencies.
Conclusion
As you can see project management plays a significant role in the healthcare industry and many rely on the processes involved to maintain a successful organization. The solutions these personnel provide to the industry save funds and keep patients and providers safe. Including them in organization strategy has proven beneficial to all parties involved.
